Sankalpa is an instruction from your conscious mind to your sub conscious mind and is a powerful tool for change; a short positive statement of intent of a change in your life and the way you behave, used during the practice of Yoga Nidra.
It is a hope, not a wish or a desire, you would not begin a Sankalpa with I want or I will and definitely not I won't. It is a positive statement, a vow which is true in the present moment and therefore stated in the present tense. It is something you intend to become or to achieve. An easy way to begin is with "I am...." The ending of the statement could be: Aware, Calm, Confident, Content, Dynamic, Fearless, Happy, Healthy, Joyful, Peaceful, or Relaxed. Popular New Years Resolutions are to lose weight, keep fit, stop smoking or drinking alcohol. To find your Sankalpa visualise how it feels to achieve your goal; how do you feel; confident, in control, healthy? Then make your Sankalpa, try to keep it short using only a couple of adjectives. Or begin your Sankalpa is with "My..." or "I have..." e.g. - "My life is filled with love and happiness" or "I have a calm and positive nature". Say your Sankalpa as soon as you wake up and before you go to sleep. This term we will be discovering our Sankalpa through Meditation and using them at the most auspicious time - during Yoga Nidra!
